A Wholly Owned Subsidiary of the AEA….

By Bob Howell, WSFA 12 News Anchor – Montgomery, AL

“A wholly owned subsidiary of the Alabama Education Association.”  That’s how the chairman of the Alabama Republican Party described the Democratic Party.  Appearing on our Newsmakers program this week, GOP chairman Mike Hubbard says Paul Hubbert’s decision to step down as Vice Chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party didn’t amount to much.  “It’s kind of humorous,” said Hubbard, “like it’s going to make a difference.”

“I don’t think Paul Hubbert woke up and said ‘I’m going to be bipartisan from here on out,’ ” Hubbard continued. “I think he just got tired of us (the state GOP) hammering him saying he was Vice President of the Democratic Party.”

Dr. Hubbert’s pronouncement caught some political observers by surprise.  He had told Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham of his decision a short time before the public announcement on July 15th. “We’re going to miss Paul,” said Turnham during the Newsmakers program. “I think Dr. Hubbert felt like he had earned some rest and some retirement at least from that endeavor of his life.”

Turnham smiled when he spoke of Hubbert’s continued presence in the Democratic Party in Alabama. “I don’t think he’s going away,” said Turnham. ” He’ll be in the wings and active in the causes he believes in.”
